Free Will

The western philosophy has a very intriguing term lost in their pages, called the Free Will. I was caught on it by the dialogue between the Bruce (not-so) Almighty and God. It is a very deep concept. And Mr. Morgan Freeman (What a name!) assures Bruce that he will not be able to do anything against a peron’s free will. The only way for him to bring about a miracle is to become a miracle himself.

So I was thinking if we have free will or not? I guess we have as much free will as the dried leaves of fall flowing down stream. For I believe that all our actions happen under His Hukam.

And some scientists and philosophers also think that if there is a God who can predict every step of yours, where is the free will?

I decided to go to www.sikhitothemax.com and find some answers. I opened up the search section and found this using English search:

ਬਧਾ ਚਟੀ ਜੋ ਭਰੇ ਨਾ ਗੁਣੁ ਨਾ ਉਪਕਾਰੁ ॥ ਸੇਤੀ ਖੁਸੀ ਸਵਾਰੀਐ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਸਾਰੁ ॥੩॥
Paying a fine under pressure, does not bring either merit or goodness. That alone is a good deed, O Nanak, which is done by one’s own free will.

So there is something like Free Will. And when is that? When we do something without being under pressure? Without being under influence.. of family, friends, society, lies, alcohol etc.?

And I believe that the only person who is free from it all is God.

So I believe Free Will exists, but it is only for God to command.

  1. Its of course true , that any action gets the max reward only when its ” Mann Bach Kram “.
Mann : Thoughts ( what are our intentions )
Bach : Speech ( what we say )
Kram : Actions ( and obviously what we do ) .
But that also comes with grace , that’s why there are Shabads in which guru ji prays that Please bless us so that we can meditate on Lord in “mann bach kram” manner.

    Coming to free will ,
I need to define something else first , divine will , bhaana
There is a definite way , God wants things to go , he expects us to go in that manner , that guidance and unambiguous advice , he gives us from inside.

But sometimes , we fail to reciprocate , we end up doing our own Bhaana .

Free will is some instinctive reflex of our mind , which may or may not confirm to divine will , so its always advisable to get in line with gurmat before reacting.
